Sombrero Reef Sweep
June 22nd, 2002 - 10th Annual Event
(this info will stay posted here & we'll update it each year)

10th Annual Sombrero Reef Sweep. Organized by the Coral Reef Sweepers - and they're looking for certified scuba divers and others to help. Call Sally at 743-2512 or Vicki at 393-0205, or stop at Capt Hook's dive shop (by Vaca Cut) or Tilden's dive shop (by Hurricane Bar/Grille).  Underwater music to be played by WAVK 105.5 FM Radio. Orientation is 5:30-7:30pm June 21 at Burdines Waterfront on 15th Street. For those unable to attend a second pre-dive briefing will be offered at 7:30am back at Burdine's on the 22nd. Sombrero is about 3 nautical miles offshore of Boot Key Harbor in Marathon, on the reef Oceanside.

This is a two-tank dive to sweep debris from Sombrero and nearby reefs. Coral Reef Sweepers and Marathon Business & Professional Women's Club are working still with the Organized Fishermen of Florida to take divers to the reef. Divers are asked to supply all their own equipment, but free air fills will be provided by three local shops (Capt Hooks or Tildens), and make a $15 per participant donation, after June 15th $20, to help defray fuel and insurance costs. Divers should arrive early enough June 22nd to allow for loading before a 9am departure from Burdine's, and the boats will return at 2pm to offload the collected trash. Divers should have standard equipment (CB, regulator, spg, mask, fins, snorkel, weights) and their certification card, two filled air tanks, gloves, a knife for cutting fish line, collection bag and refreshments (no alcohol). Since the boats do not ordinarily carry passengers participants are asked to bring along a coast guard approved life jacket.

A "post-sweep" party will be held at the Marathon Airport Terminal building from 5-8pm June 22nd.

Registration forms are online at www.reersweepers.org

We'll keep this information listed here for each year's event, then update it when the new dates and information is released.
