Put-N-Bay on South Bass Island, LAKE ERIE
August 2001 with Family - part of Great Circle Trip
(page will take a while to load - LOTS of pictures)

Put N Bay - on the South Bass Island - was about 2 hours (boat time) from our Lake Erie Marina. This small Island has many restaurants, bars and shops and is a very popular location. In the early 90's we loved to go there. Our return here in 2001 presented us with an out-of-control tourist destination that had been exploited, in my opinion, to the point of total demise of it's original self. Local character had completely disappeared and was replaced by a superficial corporate Disney image. Quality was shoddy everywhere, prices were outrageous, and tourists were herded like cattle from the ferries. Police authority was omnipresent and oppressive. I watched them take away a waverunner operator in HANDCUFFS - because he violated some minor boating rule. I'm all for enforcing courteous boating - but taking them to jail in handcuffs???

The Emily B water taxi runs boaters back and forth from the moorings to shoreside. Two water taxis run all the time during the summer.

In spite of all the detrimental changes to the place, we managed to enjoy ourselves at the park and swimming off the boat. Look below.

The girls all have a great time at Put-N-Bay.

The anchorage has all been replaced by mooring buoys. The city claims to have reserved anchorage up by the monument, but their sign, and my experience indicate that it's worthless. My 66lb Bruce anchor with 75 ft of chain would not hold us in 5 knot winds - all smooth scoured rock bottom. Moorings went in where there was previously good anchorage. One sign that is helpful for boaters new to the area is the welcome sign telling you who to call for moorings.

DeRivera Park is on the waterfront at Put-N-Bay - a great family place to roam with the kids - Lots of trees and shade, a playground, fountain, and squirrels everywhere (black canadian ones too). Capn Greg enjoys the shade (& peace) while the kids play in the playground. Jessica, Emily & Sarah, and Jessica's cousin Amber Lynn.

The antique merry-go-round is a favorite with the kids - Lisa too! Jessica, Amber & Sarah.

Wes Jr - held by mom Nikki Furbee, enjoys the entertainment with us at a cool Bar on the Island.
