The Approach into New York Harbor and through Manhattan, June 1st 2001 M/V Creative Touch

We left Atlantic City about 6 or 7pm the evening prior and ran offshore all night. Weather cooperated
and the use of the AutoPilot, coupled with the perimeter alarm on the Radar, made for easy watches
through the night. We only almost got run down by one Freighter coming into NY in the dark. We
had the right of way but somehow I don't think he cared. I got out of the channel and circled back
around behind him.

The initial approach to NY Harbor was in total darkness. At 3:00am about 20nm away you could clearly see the Verazanno bridge and lights of Manhatten. We made the Verrazono bridge, entrance to the harbor, at 5:00 am. and continued up the Hudson River all day until past sunset.

Entrance to the harbor with Manhattan on the right (World Trade Centers prominent), and the Statue of Liberty on the far left.

A better view of the Statue of Liberty, just at sunrise. The New York harbor is VERY quiet at 5-6 in the morning. Easy passage.
