Great Circle Trip:  CHICAGO - Our transition from the Great Lakes into the river systems to the Gulf of Mexico
Sept 16-19, 2001

We made landfall at Chicago after midnight, having piloted across Lake Michigan since early that morning.
Of course the Skyline from miles out in the Lake was magnificent!

Several of these pictures below are courtesy of our friends Kevin & Karin aboard the S/V WindigoIII (link to their page at the bottom)

Being so late and dark, and not knowing Burnham harbor well, we elected to drop anchor here, just inside the harbor entrance, right in front of the Convention Center - McCormick place. We moved to the Yacht Club the next morning.

Creative Touch with Jessica & Lisa on the Dock, Sears Tower in the background. Burnham Harbor Yacht Club, Chicago IL. We weighed anchor the next morning after anchoring that night, and moved to the Yacht Club. We had several friends aboard including Pat Moriarty, and Penny Smalley and her husband. /Getting through the police security however, the week after September 11th, was ANOTHER STORY!

Chicago sunrise the next morning - you can see the silhouettes of the aircraft parked on the ramp at Meig's field behind the anchored sailboats.

We can enjoy Chicago, but the really good news at this point in the trip is that Lisa has decided that she really wants to stay to live in the Florida Keys - and only visit the North.
Thank You God!

We were in Chicago for several days - staying at Burnham Harbor Yacht Club there. We reserved one day and took Jessica to the Shedd Aquariam, Adler Planetarium, and Field Natural History Museum. They were all within walking distance of the boat. Jessica had a great time. She even enjoyed the stars better than the dinosaurs, and of course identified with the tropical reef exhibit in the aquarium. Below, Jessica's face is in the middle of the Shedd Aquarium picture board.

Dad and Jess outside the Field Natural History Museum, Chicago. We wanted to take Jessica up to the observation deck of the Sears Tower (behind to the left). This was the week after the World Trade Center disaster and Jessica watched the entire thing on TV. When we asked her about going up in the building with us, she simply looked up at it and said "NO WAY". We didn't press it with her.

We entered the Chicago River on an overcast, drear and drizzly day ....

Clearance under the bridges got to be quite a problem for us! This picture is from our friends boat, S/V Windigo - but it indicates the situation. We took down the Bimini, antennaes and disassembled the davit - and STILL had only a couple inches clearance on many bridges!
