DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK

RETURN TO THE LOWER KEYS CRUISING WAYPOINTS PAGE

Fort Jefferson on Garden Key. The anchorage is marked at the bottom of the illustration. The docks are available for temporary tie up with either your dinghy or boat while you tour the Fort. The commercial charters dock here when they pull in from Key West with the tourists too. There is a campground in the area marked "A", and reasonable snorkeling off the beach there. Lots of tropical fish around the Fort. There is a nice gift shop in the Fort with normal souvenirs, and also some nice educational books and materials on the Fort, the Keys and area in general. Samuel Mudd was imprisoned here after, as a physician,  he inadvertently helped another human being who was hurt, and who he did not know had just shot President Lincoln. Hence the phrase - your name is Mud!

Be nice to the park rangers here - this is about as isolated as you can get!!

Commercial tour boats and float planes are available out of Key West to tour Fort Jefferson if you don't have or want to take your own boat. Watch the weather. There is always a possibility of extremely rough seas in the portion of open ocean crossing to the Tortugas.
